Within the scope of the „Pakiv“ initiative, 40 young Roma from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria were trained for two years in the past years. During the first year, they learned English, business administration, how to establish an association, how to develop a business concept and draw up a business plan. During the second year, they received a small amount of start-up capital from the World Bank to put their concepts into practice in their home towns. Thirty trainees from the first two groups have stayed together. They have founded national Pakiv groups in different countries, stayed in contact with one another and are trying to keep the objectives alive,

i.e. that one must and can learn something to become integrated in business and society, that one need not hide one’s origins to do this and that the values defining life among the Roma – reliability, loyalty and morality – should also apply in the outside world in which one becomes integrated.
