Our work in the past year concentrated on persuading all persons needed to realize the objectives to participate in the project, to begin with the further training courses and to let everyone experience the planned innovations in advance practical assistance projects in the educational institutions or at recreational events, in other words to build so-called "islands of hope". All this has been done. A pedagogical workshop was set up in the fall of 2007 and it has become a popular venue for holding meetings and further education courses as well as developing materials with experts, bilingual assistants and parents. The evaluation being conducted simultaneously will provide an audit. It also allows an assessment of the quality of promotion offered by the kindergartens and schools, in particular the development of skills of the children starting elementary school in the fall of 2008, whose acute needs can be remedied quickly. In this respect, it can be used to determine whether the quality of promotion provided in the preceding educational institution needs to be improved.

The project „One Square Kilometer Education“ stands on two legs: on the one hand, we need, at the very least, to respond to individual instances throughout the whole square kilometer. We cannot simply ignore the children and adolescents existing now and wait with the reform until today's six-year-olds are ready. On the other hand, we need to concentrate on the elementary school class, from which the square kilometer will systematically learn. This calls for a period of overtaxing work: if the methods work, the pressure will decline in the coming years. We are hopeful because the Neukölln district has decided to completely reform the secondary school stage coming after the elementary school. The key word in this connection is "Rütli Campus". Besides building up an intensive test project in Berlin-Neukölln with the help of the Groeben Foundation, the Breuninger Foundation has decided to sponsor and provide a major part of the funds for a second square kilometer in Berlin-Moabit.
