The CIVIS Media Award Germany was called into life in 1988 by the Federal Commissioner for Immigration Issues and ARD, the German national television and radio network, under the overall control of WDR (West German Broadcasting Company) and the Freudenberg Foundation. Up until 2002, the annual award had the motto „Living in Cultural Diversity – Against Racism and Discrimination“ in Germany.
In 2003, the media award gained Europe-wide recognition and the organization and production of the media award passed over to the newly established non-profit Civis medien foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe. The CIVIS Media Award is granted in four categories: as a European Television Award, as a German Television Award, as a CIVIS Radio Award for German programs in Europe and as an annual European thematic award, e.g. in 2008 the topic is „Business and Industry“.
